The Shine On Project

The Shine On Project is an anthology of short stories and poems relating to mental illness that encourage, support, and bring hope to sufferers, family, friends and others. All proceeds from the project will go to the National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI). To learn more about NAMI, their mission, and how to get involved with their organization, visit

To submit your work for possible publication, use this form. The deadline for submissions is May 1, 2013. The submission process is open to anyone who wants to try for a spot, this is not limited to published authors.

We are looking for real stories from real-life experiences. Not all submissions will be accepted. The objective of the book is to help reduce stigmas by educating the public on the true nature of mental illness and the good aspects of it. For example, individuals suffering mental illness are generally very creative.

If you don't have a short story or poem to submit, there are other ways to support the project:
  • Make a donation through our site to help cover expenses. An example of an expense is the cost of providing a copy of the book to each contributor. Use the button below to donate.
  • Become a sponsor of the Shine On Project by contacting me here.
  • Make a donation to NAMI directly by using their website at

What rights will I be giving up?
You'll sign a permission agreement to have the work published in the book, but there won't be any restrictions. You can publish the work in any other location at any point. You may also enter it into any contest where the work follows that contest's rules, stipulations, and regulations regarding previous publication. The only thing you're giving permission for is to publish the work in the anthology along with similar stories/poems written by others.

When will I be notified?
The deadline for submissions is May 1, 2013. We advise that if you don't hear anything back from us by the third week of May, then we have declined the submission.

When will the book come out?
The release date is TBD at this point. Updates will follow. We expect to release summer of 2013.

Will I be compensated?
All royalties, donations, and proceeds go to The National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI). You will not receive monetary compensation, however, we are working to get a personal donation or an organizational donation so we can provide a free copy of the book to all contributors. Updates will follow.

What is NAMI?
NAMI is the National Alliance of Mental Illness, a non-profit organization that seeks to reduce stigmas and educate the public about mental illness. You can learn more about their organization by visiting
